What's a Dried Prune (Plum)?

At Valley Dried Fruit we grow the California dried prune (plum), or what is called, the French prune, which is considered to be an offshoot of La Petite D’Agen. The prune is recognized by health professionals as one of the ultimate 'superfruits' because of its remarkable health benefits. Prunes have one of the highest antioxidant ratings of any other fruit or vegetable. Valley Dried Fruit offers Natural Condition prunes (plums).

At maturity, the California French prune has a royal purple outer skin and amber colored flesh. One thing that sets California dried prunes (plums) apart from other varieties it can be dried with its pit without fermenting.

Once it's dried out, our beautiful royal purple Prune (plum) does look a little awkward to most people. Appearances, however, like they say, are only skin deep. Under that wrinkled surface lies a gem of a fruit and a treasure of health benefits.

Studies suggest the following positive health benefits of prunes (plums) nutrition.

Prunes Build Bones
Dr. Arjmandi is currently conducting a clinical study, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the California Dried Plum Board, comparing the effects of dried apples versus prunes on bone mineral density in post-menopausal women. He says that, thus far, 30 women in the prune group have had at least a 6% increase in hip bone (a critical area for maintaining strong bones) and that one woman had a notable 11% increase over her baseline measurement. In earlier preliminary data, all prune-eaters showed at least some improvement in bone mass by six months into the trial, he says.
